Marketing & sales

Know the difference

Marketing communicates a solution to a prospect. Sales delivers that solution at a marketable price. They are different professions, and bringing in a salesperson too early, or a marketer too late, is a common path to failure.

Talk to a strategic marketing professional early, to build an overall strategy and a timeline of key milestones. We partner with Strategic Planning Specialists, led by principal strategist Stuart Arnold.

IP certified professionals

Protect it before you profit from it

The only way to profit from an idea is to put it into use. Intellectual property takes many forms: copyrights, patents, industrial designs, trademarks and trade dress. Praxis focuses on utility patents, and works with patent lawyers across the country.

Only registered practitioners can file patent applications. Find one with the USPTO practitioner search.

Funding beyond a bank loan

Venture capital groups invest in exchange for a share of your company, by buying stock, lending money or both, and usually profit when they sell their stake after a set period. Research investors carefully and expect a due diligence process.

Public and private economic development groups can also help, depending on where you are, your stage of development and your circumstances.

Questions about resources

When should I bring in marketing, and when sales?

Marketing first. A strategic marketing professional builds the overall strategy and milestone timeline; sales comes in once there's a solution to sell at a marketable price.

How do I find a registered patent professional?

Use the USPTO practitioner search. Only registered practitioners can file patent applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

What will a venture capital group expect?

A share of ownership in exchange for capital, and a due diligence review of your company. The National Venture Capital Association publishes model legal documents used in these deals.

Are there options besides borrowing?

Yes. Economic development groups, public and private, can help depending on your location and stage. The SBA, the EDA and NACEDA can connect you with local organizations. See our Kentucky start-up ecosystem guide too.
